Etsy + West Elm joined forces to put together a holiday shopping event on Dec 1. Etsy sellers coast to coast were selected to set up shop at their local West Elm store for an evening of handmade for holiday workshops and shopping.

REDSTAR ink was among the shops selected to participate at the San Diego location. It was a lovely event, thanks to the staff at West Elm and the Etsy groups that were there. I enjoyed meeting new people and artists. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, especially my dear friends who have been so supportive of REDSTAR ink.

It is amazing what people leave behind at the beach. From old towels to cigarette butts, the amount of trash left behind is unbelievable. This weekend we did a beach cleanup with Surfrider. My husband and I have been Surfrider members for a years now and we just signed our 4 year old son up as a member as well. When we moved to San Diego 12 years ago we were so grateful to live near the ocean. The more we learn about the precious ecosystem, the more we try to protect it. Teaching our son about living green and protecting mother earth at an early age is something that we strive to do every day.

And we have found that doing good things is contagious. My dear friend Aaryn recently joined Surfrider and is already very active in the organization. I am hoping that more of my friends here in San Diego will join us!

This weekend is the Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles. Once again, REDSTAR ink is joining up with Andrew B. King, an amazing artist specializing in painting and ceramics. If you attended the LA show last year, you may remember him as the "goldfish guy". Showcasing his collection of vibrant goldfish and snail paintings, Andrew made a name for himself at the Renegade Show in Los Angeles last summer. This year, he has created a stunning collection of ceramics that is the perfect compliment to my Native Summer Collection.

My heart was saddened when I heard about the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan last week. I love Japan for many reasons. The culture. The people. It is where my husband proposed to me. It is home to my brother-in-law and his family. It is peaceful and beautiful and fascinating. I have so many wonderful memories from the times I have visited. With the threat of nuclear disaster and the images of the devastated landscape, I pray that Japan will recover quickly.

There are so many wonderful people and companies working to collect money to send to Japan for relief efforts. Here are a few that I have contributed to.

Sketchbook Project

Since graduating from college and moving from Arizona to Southern California, I haven't been an active part of the art community. Sure, I work along side graphic designers every day and a network of artists from Etsy, but I haven't exhibited in years. This changed last fall I found a website called Art House Co-op, which "creates massive, international art projects that tie thousands of artists together – and anyone can participate."

I signed up for the Sketchbook Project. They sent me a blank moleskin notebook and two rules to follow: "first, the book must be used in some way - no sending us back an empty book or a completely different book! Second, the sketchbook must stay within its original dimensions (because we don't want to have to provide an extra suitcase just for your book while we're touring the country)."

Art House Co-op

Each book was given a barcode and cataloged into the Brooklyn Art Library system. It's really cool because as every time somebody views my sketchbook, I get an email letting me know.

Assigned with the topic of mysterious maps, my sketchbook was based on my travels to Japan. Instead of "sketching", I created layers with photographs, scans and patterns using recycled paper and transparencies. The cover resembles the Japanese flag with a circular window revealing a map of Tokyo printed on transparency, backed with a classic red Japanese pattern.

With a map of Kamakura as a backdrop, the photo was taken in a tunnel en route to the coastal city of Kamakura.

The Daibutsu Buddha paired with bamboo. Both symbolizing strength and serenity. It takes my breath away every time I visit.

Design Your Own Font

We all know that a hand written envelope is more personal than one with a typed out label. But who has time for that when you have a stack of 50 envelopes to address? One solution is to use a handwritten font and print the mailing address directly on your envelopes.

There are several websites that can generate a font from your very own handwriting. I chose www.handfont.com to create mine...and it cost less than $10! With four easy steps, a scanned sample of your handwriting is turned into a true type font that you can use in any application.

Upload your form

Buy and download your font

Once you have your font, you can set up your document in whatever program you choose to use. (I created a document in InDesign and exported the multi-page document to a pdf file.) You can even add hand drawn elements to personalize it even more.

Finally, I sent my document to print and minutes later, my envelopes were done.

Surfing Celebs

In September I attended the Surfrider Foundation's fifth annual Celebrity Expression Session. Hosted by the beautiful Christina Applegate, the event took place at Surfrider Beach in Malibu. As a Surfrider member myself, I was stoked when my husband told me that the company he works for, Cali Bamboo, was was a sponsoring the event with Barefoot Wine. For every wave each celebrity caught, both sponsors donated $100.

The celebrities this year were Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Sam Trammell, Martyn Lenoble, Austin Nichols, Eric Balfour, Eric Avery, and Brian Geraghty. An amazing lineup, to say the least.

So they ended up raising $29,600 for Surfrider, which is amazing. But I have to admit, the most amazing part for me was standing a few feet from Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as they waxed their boards and suited up.

As the web master and videographer/photographer for Cali Bamboo, my husband Walker was lucky enough to have press access and interviewed all of the celebrities. Not a bad gig. Check out his footage here:

During the event, all of the celebrities, including Christina Applegate signed a surfboard which will be given away to a lucky winner on Crowdrise. All you have to do to enter is donate $44 by November 29. The proceeds will go to Surfrider which is such a great organization that protects our beaches, coastlines and oceans.

There is a common thread with most of my products...COLOR. While maintaining a consistent look and design aesthetic, most REDSTAR ink products are black and red.

But I have gotten numerous requests for customized goods in different colors so I have added a new color option to my top selling items. I am pleased to introduce to you brown and blue, now available at REDSTAR ink.

Oil Spill Response Market

Over at Poppytalk Handmade this month, they are having an online virtual fundraiser called the "Oil Spill Response Market".

In response to the devastation from the BP oil spill in the Gulf and continuing crisis, 70 artists, designers, and vintage shop owners are donating one item from their shop. Once sold, they will be donating the proceeds to help the vulnerable communities threatened by the oil spill through Oxfam America who has a special online donation section.

REDSTAR ink is proud to be donating the Summer of Love photo album which can be ordered here...and I will be throwing in lots of extras!

This is the oil spill item that I purchased. It is a limited edition print by Matte Stephens. I am so excited to add this one to the gallery!

A lovely little shop has just opened in the Kensington area of San Diego featuring fabulous women's accessories, gifts, body, and baby products. The Sugar Kiss Boutique features local designers from the San Diego area.

I have had the pleasure of working with the owner of Sugar Kiss, Quincy (pictured above), who aims to "unite amazingly talented people together to form friendships, collaborations, and networking opportunities and feature these designers in a boutique that caters to the handmade, unique, and locally sourced and pair them with national and international lines that compliment the look and feel of the boutique."

Oh, did I mention that REDSTAR ink products are sold here? Another great thing about Quincy's shop is her dedication to finding eco-friendly goods. If you live in the San Diego area, you must cruise by her shop. It is my number one stop whenever I have a gift to buy.

I am fortunate enough to live and work in the beautiful seaside city of San Diego. One of the constant struggles here is protecting the beaches and ocean of southern California. REDSTAR ink is a proud supporter of Surfrider Foundation which is on the forefront of political and environmental issues that threaten our ecosystem.

My husband and I will be attending the 10th Annual Art Gala hosted by Surfrider in Del Mar, California. The evening's program will include an awards ceremony recognizing San Diego County the company that my husband works for, Cali Bamboo for their contributions to environmental issues and Surfrider Foundation.

Proceeds from the ticket sales and auctions fund the chapter and local programs including water quality testing, education outreach, beach cleanups, pollution monitoring and advocacy efforts.

On Saturday I participated in the Queen Bee Market, a local art fair with about 40 other vendors. This was my first show and a great learning experience as I prepare for the Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles this summer.

The best part about doing these things is meeting new people and networking. There were so many amazing people there.

I love the morning after a night of rain. The earth and air are clean and crisp. The plants look fresh and alive. And the smog has been erased from the horizon.

I had to drive up to North County for some supplies, which is normally a daunting task and a huge interruption to my day. But this morning I looked forward to spending a few hours in the car, listening to the latest Weezer album as loud as I wanted. A poppy delight!

I have been doing some work at the Navy base on Coronado Island for the past week. While Coronado is beautiful, North Island is not. And the job I am doing is less than exciting. As I walked in to the laboratory today I had to pause at the beautiful blooms on the trees outside. So lovely and vibrant, I stopped to snap a picture with my iphone, using the hipstamatic application.

2010 calendars

I am excited to announce that my 2010 calendars are now available. They have been in my shop for about a week now and so far are selling very well.

While I am not a big fan of making resolutions, I do like to make goals for myself. One of my ongoing goals is to stay organized in 2010. Since I have started REDSTAR ink, it is more important now than ever.

I am a list maker. Although I keep track of some things on my iphone, I still keep a daily calendar where I jot down the things I need to accomplish each day, both at work and at home. The twenty 10 calendar is the perfect planner for this.

I also created a bill paying calendar. I know most people use online banking or bill pay systems. So do I. But I like to have a place to put my bills when I get them and I like to check them off my list when they are paid. I have been using my bills calendar for the past year and I have to say, it is fantastic. I love that everything is all in one place and it makes filing at the end of the month or year a breeze.

The Studio

I love before and after shots and this one is no exception. Anyone who knows me is aware that I am a bit obsessive compulsive. I am very organized, but you wouldn't know it from the before shot.

I have an office upstairs where my computer is, but my studio is in the garage. When I first set it up, I used a lot of old things that I already had. Unfortunately there were a lot of storage solutions that were not very functional for my needs.

After a few trips to Ikea and The Container Store, I created a space that is visually pleasing and very functional.

My website is finally up. I am very excited to finally have a site. After months of waiting, my husband Walker, of Syntax Graphics, was able to free up some of his time to work on redstarink.com. Although there are some changes I would like to make and we still need to do more work on a few of the sections, it is a great start. I especially love the short video clip Walker whipped up. He is so talented!

Spanish Notes

Charley Harper

I came across some amazing skateboard decks a few months ago that really caught my eye. The decks were made by Habitat using Charley Harper designs. If the name Charley Harper is not familiar to you, perhaps his artwork is.

Since then, I have started collecting some Harper stuff, most recently the beautiful book compiled by Todd Oldham. I am salivating over the 400+ page book that includes an interview with the artist before he passed away. I am so inspired by the simplistic, yet articulate style of Charley Harper. He truly is an inspiration.

Time For A Website

Every company needs a website. Even though I am a graphic designer I have never made one before. Redstarink.com will be my first one. Luckily my husband Walker is a very talented web designer. You can check out some of his work at www.syntaxgraphics.com. Not only does he create websites, he also teaches his clients how to manage and update them.

Having a website made can be a very expensive part of starting a business. To cut down on expenses, it is important to be able to maintain your site once it is up and running. You can also save some money by having all of your text written and reviewed for mistakes, photos and images that you want to use and an idea of what you want your site to look like. This cuts down on billable hours for the web designer.

So I am gathering all of the info that I want to incorporate in my site and scheduling an appointment...with my husband.

The beautiful Diana has arrived. I ordered the instant back with it so I could play with it and get some instant gratification. After doing the modification to the camera, adding the instant back and loading the instax instant film I started to play. I quickly realized that i need to practice and get to know the camera.

I have been reading up on toy cameras for weeks now. Lomography.com is a great resource. I also purchased Plastic Cameras and Toycam Handbook which are great books with lots of information.

Step 1: Get A Business License

When starting a business it is important to know what the legal requirements are before you start to sell your merchandise. I found a great book called Craft Inc. by Meg Mateo Ilasco which is a wonderful resource that explains the basics of starting your own company. It is important to know that every state has different regulations so it is important to know that the steps I am taking are the required by the state of California.

One of the first things that I had to do was apply for a business license or Business Tax Certificate in the city of San Diego. Since my husband is a freelance web designer and videographer, he had to do this as well. As a married couple we were able to apply for the license together even though he runs his freelance design service under Syntax Graphics and I run my paper goods products under REDSTAR ink. Both ficticious names or Doing Business As (DBA)s are listed on our business tax certificate. To apply, Walker went to the County Treasurer Office, filled out the paperwork and paid the fees. The tax fee was $34 and a processing fee of $25. It is the business owner's responsibility to renew each year.

It is important to do this step first because you will need a DBA in order to apply for a business checking account and a seller's permit.

Beginning

I have been working on starting a business for a long time. Since 2006 to be exact. I decided to start a family around the same time however and once I became pregnant that became my focus. So here I am 2 ½ years later. I have a beautiful son and I am slowly getting my company, REDSTAR ink under way.

REDSTAR ink is handmade paper goods created by designer Marcie Hicks. With a clean aesthetic and a focus on personal organization, REDSTAR ink provides products that are simple, bold, and modern.

In an age of computers and hand-held technology, REDSTAR ink celebrates the tactile quality of paper. There is something satisfying about checking items off a list or opening a piece of mail from a friend.

Using carefully selected materials, REDSTAR ink is committed to creating eco-friendly paper goods. All products are handmade in San Diego, California. Recycled materials are used whenever possible.

As I go throught the process of starting my paper goods company I will document it as I go along. I will share my inspiration, frustration, excitement, disappointment, successes and failures along the way.

The Weepies

After 3 weeks of unseasonably warm weather for January, it has cooled off today and the rains have come. Of course, cool in San Diego means it is in the low 60's today. Nevertheless, I am in the kitchen making chili in the crock pot and listening to folk music.

Last month I was turned on to a band called The Weepies after reading a blog from the Kitchn. Blogger Sara Kate made a playlist of songs she likes to hear while she cooks. It is a great list and I downloaded most of the songs from itunes.

I decided that I need to put my apron on and spend more time in the kitchen. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking. Nothing fancy but I like trying new recipes that sound tasty.

My friend Jenny made a delicious quiche one morning when we were visiting her in Vegas a few months ago. She was kind enough to share her recipe with me so I decided to give it a shot.
